~ Earth Hour 2011 ~
We can do our part in conserving energy and protecting the Earth. Switching off the lights on Earth Hour is a little step and commitment to this global movement. Of course, we can always make an attempt to keep this habit beyond the hour:
1) Switching off the lights/appliances when not in use.
2) Keep our air-condition to 25-26 oC.
3) Using energy saving bulb/appliances
4) Reduce the amount of waste. Keeping in mind the 3R principle. (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle)
5) Whenever possible, take a walk or public transport. :)
Lights will also be out on many of our iconic landmarks like The Merlion, The Fullerton Hotel, Esplanade, Singapore Flyer etc. Various organisations will also be participating actively in this year's Earth Hour movement.
Hotels - Various hotels (e.g. Pan Pacific, Intercontinental Singapore etc), have pledged to switch off/dim the lights at certain areas in support of the global initiatives.
IKEA - Join IKEA for a solar-lamp lit dinner at both restaurants at the Alexandra and Tampines outlets during Earth Hour. All proceeds collected at bothe restaurants will be donated to WWF Singapore in support of their conservation and outreach efforts in Singapore. The IKEA building facade and external lights will also be switched off!
Woodland Waterfront - There will be flea market, star gazing activities and movie screening of "Monsters vs Aliens"!
Date: 26 March 2011, Saturday
Venue: Woodlands Waterfront, Event Space
Time: 5pm – 10pm
Orchard Road - Lights will be off in Orchard Road on Earth Hour and transformed into "Sea of candles"! Light up a candle to make your pledge! (Venue: Stage in front of Wisma Atria)

There will be an official light-up on the streets of Chinatown TONIGHT with lion dance performances, entertainement and not to forget the grand finale of firecrackers display! Every year, it will attract a huge crowd and so we usually stay home since it is very challenging to bring the kids along and squeeze among the crowd. Not to mention the long waiting time and securing a good spot to watch the firecrackers display.
There are a series of events lined up for Chinese New Year 2011. We will be looking into bringing the children to some of these programs since we have a longer CNY holiday this year. ^_^

~ Make it a Happee Day for Children with Cancer ~
As parents, we all hope to see our children spend their childhood happily, grow up and be in good health. Unfortunately, there is also a group of children who are battling with cancer every single day. They too wish to live normally and happily like other children, but aren't as fortunate. Families with cancer patients are also facing the long, hard battle as it takes a lot of strain and toil from them both physical and financially.
Mother, Inc (By Mommy Daphne) has worked with the Singapore Children's Cancer Foundation to organize a mini carnival at the Hort Park on 31st October (Sunday). Apart from raising some funds, it also helps to bring some cheers and joy to the little children.
If you wish to contribute, here's how:
- Join in the event on 31st Oct! (Be a volunteer or you can bring your kids too!)
- Help to donate to the Children Cancer's Foundation
- Spread the word and help publicize this event! (on Facebook, Twitter, personal blog etc)
For more information, please visit Mommy Daphne's blog: http://www.motherinc.org/happee-day/make-it-a-happee-day-for-children-with-cancer/

~ Youth Olympic Games (YOG) Singapore is Here! ~
How much does Denver & Gladys know about YOG? The closest to their hearts is the YOG cheer song - "You Are The one, Singapore" composed and sang by JJ Lin (林俊杰). We have been hearing it for months and the repeating lyrics and tune makes it so easy for the children to remember and sing.
Not to forget our iconic mascots Lyo and Merly! Lyo is the Lion of the Youth Olympics and Merly ("mer" stands for sea and "l y" stands for liveliness and youthfulness) reminds me of our Merlion. There are so many merchandise products on sale. (Tshirts, stuff toys, stamps etc). Denver likes Lyo and Gladys likes Merly.
Torch relay ran through Sengkang on 10th August. It was a rainy morning and we stayed home since Denver was sick. We missed the event but the 12 year old boy, Low Wei Jie from Compassvale Primary hit the headlines when he ran 15km for 2 1/2 hour in his flip flops following the torch relay in the rain! He definitely displayed a lot of determineation, impressing and winning the hearts of many Singaporeans. Best of all, he now gets to be the torch bearer! :D
YOG competitions are held all around Singapore. The closest to us is of course the Hockey matches to be held at the Sengkang Hockey Stadium. It is part of the Sengkang Sports & Recreation Centre located at Anchorvale in Sengkang. Tickets are ranged between $10 - $30 depending if you are watching the preliminaries or finals. Not sure if it will steer some crowd over Sengkang. :)

~ Hungry Ghost Festival 2010 ~
There are many things that Chinese will try to avoid doing during this month..including getting married, moving/buying house, travelling overseas, swimming, hanging clothes out at night, staying out late etc. My mum always tells me be careful with my words and to watch where I am going and not to kick, cross over or step on the offerings, ashes or altars.
During this month, we will also see various Getais (歌台) around Singapore where there will be singing and performances. The first row of the seats are reserved for "special guests" and we are not to sit on it.
Superstition?? Well, sometimes it is best to be careful and safe.

~ QUEST collectible cards for grabs ~
Release Date: 01 Oct 2009
Successfully reaches out to 29,000 children aged 7 to 12 years old with 550,000 collectible cards fully redeemed since launch in June.
An increase of about 30% in loans in June and July 2009 as compared to the same period last year.
I too first learned about the Quest cards last year and recently, 60 new Quest cards are up for grabs! Each packet will contain 3 quest cards and this is redeemable with every loan of four books.
Denver & Gladys already enjoy going to the library since young and so redeeming the collectible cards is an extra bonus. We have increased our loans from 12 to 18 books per week and have collected 20 out of the 60 cards to date. Many of which are duplicates and I guess its hard to collect all the 60 of them. :) Still, we will continue visiting the library and our collection till the end of the promotional period.

~ Bloggers Family Pledge Movement ~
In conjunction with this year's 25th Anniversary of National Family Celebrations 2010 (NFC 2010) - the Singapore Pledge Movement, Nuffnang will be giving away 700 tickets to various attractions in Singapore to Bloggers!!
NOTE: Each winner will be given 7 tickets to bring family members to an attraction.
Attractions include:
- Hippo Tour
- 4D Magix/CineBlast
- Luge & Skyride
- Songs of the Sea
- Singapore Flyer
All you need to do is be part of the Bloggers Family Pledge Movement by making a commitment to your family. Prizes aside, most importantly is keeping that promise that you have made.
My pledge towards my family will be:
"I pledge to spend more quality time with my family, to listen, care, treasure, love and appreciate my love ones"
In today's society, it's always a struggle working out time for your family, work and personal time. We do not need to take the children out all the time, just giving them attention and spending quality time at home also helps. Simple things like eating together, reading them a story book, playing, art & crafts or even doing housework/cooking is fun. I hope I can spend a little more time doing all these with them and be a less nerve-wracking mother. :p
The fact that we have our family with us all the time, we tend to forget the basic necessity to listen and talk to each other... lending an ear and giving comfort. Forgotten to say "你好吗?", "我爱你", "谢谢你". I'm guilty of that too... always taking things for granted and getting emotional at times. Hence, taking this opportunity, I would like to spend more time with my parents, listening and talking to them. Buy them little stuff or taking them out to eat.
So mark your calendar today! Start to plan sometime aside on 29th May 2010 (Saturday) with your family and have a good time together.

SwimSafer will be rolled out at public swimming pools on 5 July 2010 and all instructors teaching at SSC will have to be SwimSafer certified, as well as teaching swimming classes based on the SwimSafer syllabus. Hubby said Denver's instructor (who is a life guard) told him that he too will be going through the induction courses next month to be certified. He also expressed his concern that Denver will need to brush up on his strokes with the new criterias.
For more information, please visit: http://www.ssc.gov.sg/
Looking forward to see how the new improved swimming program will be like.

~ New Travel Blog ~
I just created a new blog to capture all our past holiday trips and the future ones that we may have.
Reason being there are so many photos and I really didn't want to miss out any of the memorable shots or videos of the places we have been and the food that we have tried. It will take me quite a long time to transfer all the details out... but bit by bit it will be there in time to come. There are still so many more trips that I have yet to post.
So in the meantime, please bear with the messy layout and incomplete details. ^_^

~ Nuffnang ~
I have heard and seen nuffnang ads many times in the various blogs which I read/visit sometime ago... Just that I was lazy to try adding one to our blog.. :) Well, I finally made a new addition! Very curious and certainly not sure if it will bring in any earnings (maybe yes in a very very long run. hahahha) but I surely like the analytics and reporting feature nuffnang generates. ^_^

~ The Boy's Bridage Sharity Gift Box ~
For the past few years, Hubby has been donating to the Boy's Bridage Sharity Gift box to help those needy and bring them some cheer. Non perishable items are recommended and Hubby usually donate sack of rice.
Last night, we went to NTUC (Hougang Point Branch) to purchase our groceries and saw the gift box outside. The 2 boys standing by were very polite in answering our questions and helping to organise the donations into the box. Big Thank you to all of them who have been waiting and working long hours in support of this donation drive for the less fortunate.
Hubby decided to buy canned food this year.. so we purchased a box of canned sardines. Denver enjoyed putting many cans of sardines into the box. ^_^ We told him that this is for the needy and we should do our part to help. Every little bit counts and hopefully there will be more donations coming in to bring more Christmas Cheer.

Do send in your donations when you see them! Here's Gladys giving a BIG THUMBS UP for a good deed!
